The Overpoort will soon be lit up in pink. Coloured lighting is intended to make the street more attractive, now that a few bars in this iconic nightlife district are also going under. Meanwhile, the so-called ‘alternative’ student clubs – where the focus isn’t on drinking and going out – are on the rise. Admittedly, not everyone finds their way to these societies: whilst they are more connected online than ever, some students struggle with such a strong sense of loneliness that they give up their student accommodation and move back home.
How do young people find connection and a sense of belonging? Who is being made room for, and who feels left out? What keeps some young people away from the traditional nightlife districts: a difference in musical taste, a focus on healthy living, or a widespread feeling of insecurity? And how do you, as a venue owner or organiser, deal with this: can or should every venue offer a place for everyone?
In this panel, we’ll attempt to answer these questions – and we’ll probably raise many more. Disclaimer: the question about the ideal light colour for the Overpoort is likely to remain unanswered.
