Respect the Roots is a bi-monthly podcast hosted by Djahid at Gimic Radio. In this podcast, we dive deeper into various nightlife communities/concepts and discuss the history behind them, what it means for the people that are part of these communities, how they get gentrified/commercialised, and much more. For CLUSTER FESTIVAL, the podcast heads to Ghent with three inspiring artists to talk about something more abstract: how the art of mixing can be used as a means to heal someone’s diaspora.

Feeling diasporic translates to a quiet, persistent ache for a culture, language, or version of your heritage that feels just out of reach. It is a feeling of being culturally detached or changed to completely fit into your ancestral homeland. By selecting music that stems from one’s culture, artists can use mixing as a means to reconnect with their roots and create a feeling of belonging when doing what they love the most: connecting people through the shared love of music.

In this episode, Djahid is joined by Akano Toto, LOV, and Shanti Ofori to discuss this topic and dive deeper into their art as a DJ and how they use this to reconnect with their culture.
